from Convention Coordinator
Great Lakes and Swell Organs? Yes! The Southwest Michigan Chapter of AGO invites you to Kalamazoo and Battle Creek in the summer of 2013 for the Great, Swell, and Positive of our region’s convention.
In the Great Lakes region, we are about 40 miles east of the Lake Michigan beaches, midway between Detroit and Chicago, with convenient connections by air, train, bus, or car. Our convention hotel, the four-star Radisson, lies right downtown. A block south, Bronson Park, with its flowers, fountains, shade trees, and benches, is surrounded by many of our church sites. One block east of the park are many eating places on the Kalamazoo Mall, the nation’s first pedestrian mall in 1959. Our final convention day will be in nearby Battle Creek, “Cereal City,” home of Kellogg and Post cereal companies. The original Mr. Kellogg left us four Skinner organs.
Swell Organs? Yes! We have an amazing array of organs – Létourneaus, Casavant, Dobsons, Wicks, Nichols & Simpson, Ott, and Skinners. They’re nearly side-by-side in Kalamazoo and within a block in Battle Creek. No busing needed, no busing fee! The transportation to Battle Creek and back is already included in your registration fee. Our scheduled performers and 15 workshops will definitely inspire you. Unique to our convention is the opportunity to work, learn, and perform with a top-rated choral conductor, Joe Miller, of Westminster Choir College. The early registration fee is available until February 28, 2013. Why not register now? The Radisson Plaza Hotel, too, is ready with a special rate for “American Guild of Organists.”
We are Positively excited about being with you! WELCOME!
Barbara Hong, Convention Coordinator
from Regional Councillor
Greetings from AGO Region V, the Great Lakes Region.
I want to take this opportunity to encourage members and friends of the American Guild of Organists to consider attending the "Great Lakes • Swell Organs" Regional Convention in Southwest Michigan in summer 2013, based in Kalamazoo with a day in Battle Creek. If you are not familiar with these two beautiful cities in Southwest Michigan, I urge you to attend our Region V Convention to learn more.
Having toured all the convention venues and heard the organs myself, I can assure you that the churches are beautiful and the organs are amazing. You won't believe it!!! Not only will these churches make fantastic program venues, but I believe this wonderful collection of pipe organs will offer inspiration to both musicians and music lovers alike.
The Convention Steering Committee has done an outstanding job with selecting venues and made great choices in planning, scheduling, and programming. As I met with them for the first time in August 2012, I observed their great positive energy. These planners have forged a bond to create a great positive force, not only for this convention but also for the organ world in general.
We all need examples of positive energy and excellence in our lives and in our work. I am convinced this convention will provide exciting inspiration, friendly support, and opportunities for stimulating educational enrichment to all who attend. You need not be an organist or live in Region V to register for "Great Lakes • Swell Organs." I encourage anyone reading this message not to miss this excellent opportunity to experience first-hand the wonderful hospitality that we will be offered in Southwest Michigan next summer, June 30 – July 3.
Best wishes for safe travels –
Dr. David K. Lamb, CAGO
AGO Councillor for Region V
